Measuring the smearing of the Galactic 511-keV signal: positron propagation or supernova kicks?

چکیده

Here, we attempt to constrain the propagation length of positrons by a spatial analysis 511-keV line and ortho-positronium (ortho-Ps) continuum in Milky Way bulge from 15 yr INTEGRAL/SPI data. Weidenspointner et al. (2006) reconstructed an image energy band 410–500 keV, where ortho-Ps is dominant, found asymmetric component. For first time, perform spectrally resolved study that extends lower energies, >200 keV. This leads improvement statistical quality boosts discriminant power existing data because expected flux about 4–4.5 times larger than 511 keV alone. Including allows us compare various tracers positron annihilation use stellar templates, dark matter (DM) profiles, or disc gas maps, combinations thereof. Among most...

GRBs and the 511 keV emission of the Galactic bulge

We consider the phenomenology of the 511 keV emission in the Galactic bulge, as recently observed by INTEGRAL, and propose a model is which the positrons are produced by gamma-ray bursts (GRB) associated with mini starbursts in the central molecular zone (CMZ). We show that the positrons can easily diffuse across the bulge on timescales of ∼ 10 7 yr, and that their injection rate by GRBs is com...

The galactic 511 keV line from electroweak scale WIMPs

We consider possible mechanisms via which electroweak scale WIMPs χ could provide the source of the INTEGRAL/SPI 511 keV photon flux from the galactic centre. We consider scenarios where the WIMP spectrum contains near-degeneracies, with MeV-scale splitting, and focus on three possible production mechanisms for galactic positrons: (i) collisional excitation of the WIMP to a nearby charged state...

Dark Matter and the INTEGRAL / SPI 511 keV signal

Abstract We propose a WIMP candidate with an “excited state” 1-2 MeV above the ground state, which may be collisionally excited and de-excites by ee pair emission. By converting its kinetic energy into pairs, such a particle could produce a substantial fraction of the 511 keV line observed by INTEGRAL/SPI in the inner Milky Way. Only a small fraction of the WIMPs are above threshold, and that f...

On the Origin of the 511 keV Emission in the Galactic Centre

Diffuse 511 keV line emission, from the annihilation of cold positrons, has been observed in the direction of the Galactic Centre for more than 30 years. The latest high-resolution maps of this emission produced by the SPI instrument on INTEGRAL suggest at least one component of the emission is spatially coincident with the distribution of ∼70 luminous, low-mass X-ray binaries detected in the s...

On the 511 keV emission line of positron annihilation in the Milky Way

I review our current understanding of positron sources in the Galaxy, on the basis of the reported properties of the observed 511 keV annihilation line. It is argued here that most of the disk positrons propagate away fom the disk (due to the low density environment) and the resulting low surface brightness annihilation emission is currently undetectable by SPI/INTEGRAL. It is also argued that ...
